Fire safety signs are divided into the following main categories:
  1. Escape Route: Exit and Fire exit Signs
  2. Escape Equipment: Door Mechanism and Location Signs
  3. Fire Fighting: Equipment and Location Signs
  4. Mandatory Notice: Fire Action Signs
  5. Mandatory Instruction: Door Signs for Fire Safety Management
  6. Prohibition: Fire Prevention and Unsafe Social Activity Signs
  7. Hazard Warning: Risk Identification

An escape route sign should incorporate, or be used with, an arrow which is in accordance with BS5499-4 : 2000. The arrow serves to denote the direction of travel that an occupant should take in order to reach a place of safety.

The following is an extract from BS5499: Part 4: 2000:

"4.7 Use of arrows
The use of an appropriate arrow will assist with understanding of the direction of egress and also make the sign more conspicuous."

Double Sided Escape Route Signs
The British Standard for Escape Route Signing, BS5499-4:2000 recommends that for an escape route signing system to be effective, it is important that from any place within the building occupants should have sight of a sign, or series of signs, which leads them to a place of safety.

There are areas within a means of escape route that can prevent a person from fixing an escape route sign either on the wall or above a door. Examples of these are factory environments (as illustrated), floor to ceiling doors, and corridors which lead into open areas, indicating a change of direction.

These Photoluminescent Rigid PVC double sided escape route signs incorporate the internationally recognised graphical symbol for escape routes, and are an effective alternative to traditional emergency lighting systems.

Escape Door Mechanism Signs
The priority in any emergency requiring evacuation is to enable occupants to leave the building and reach a place of safety quickly. It is important that all escape and access door mechanisms provided for use in an emergency are clearly identified, and that the operating instructions are clearly marked.

Fire Exit and Exit Signs
AAA fire exit and exit signs assist in the identification of the means of escape route and to be effective it is important that from any place within the building occupants have sight of a sign or series of signs, which leads them to a place of safety.

The escape route identified by the sign should be the escape route with the shortest travel distance.

Fire Extinguisher Identification Signs
Under a risk assessment of premises, it is important to identify not only the location, but also the type of fire extinguisher required. An identification sign suitably positioned by the extinguisher will provide a constant reminder of the type of extinguisher and types of fire it can be used on.  AAA fire fighting equipment location and identification signs incorporate graphical symbols for classes of fire from BS EN3-5: 1996.
